Sitting out here alone in California....
....I remember many happy times of childhood...
my Aunt blanche and Uncle Al Steinberg lived in the Weequahic section...
they lived in a three-story wooden walk-up painted pale green....
my Uncle Al was an upholsterer in South Orange...
and he had a woody station wagon.
....on Sundays, all of Aunt Blanche's children would go to her
house....
and she, being an fine Hungarian-Jewish cook,
created stuffed cabbages, krowpletzlah.(noodles with fried cabbage)...
sometimes wonderful fried chicken...or fried smelts...
and wonderful lemon-meringue pies...
her husband was a member of the Masonic Hillbillies...
and once a year, they had a picnic...
it was a great event for me...
out of Newark and into the faraway open spaces....
......on Saturdays,
my friends and I....around 1958..
would go to the Park Movie Theater on Bergen Street
and see movies like...
The Ten Commandments and Imitation of Life...
or the long trailer...not to mention Rodan and Godzilla!
next to the movie theater was a popular clothing shop called Sybil's
Shoppe...
and on the other side of the movie theater was a fish store...with
white porcelain tile tubs with great big fish floating in it.
.....and who could ever ever forget Henry's Sweet Shop on Bergen
street...
with that amazing glowing juke box and beautiful murals painted
in the back room?
the most lovely confectionary in the world...
licorice pipes and nougat...the best butter crunch...
and great tuna fish sandwiches on toast....
sublime chocolate ice cream...
He also sold licorice pipes and chocolate cigarettes in beautiful
foil papers...
come to think of it...
who remembers Clark Bars, Goldenberg Chews..
Bonomo Turkish Taffy...Mary Janes, Black Cow Pops,
Jujubes, Kerr's Butterscotch, Beechnut Gum...
and of course, Katy Keene comics, Patsy and Hedy comics and Millie
the Model....?
anyone remember the Goldincharm Beauty Parlor on Bergen Street...turning
out beehives and artichokes?
the coconut cream pie at The Tavern does get my vote for the best
dessert ever...
remember their elegant soups poured by the waiter out steaming
silver cups?
remember how warm and toasty that vestibule was coming in from
the cold winter night?
it was so cozy!!
and then there was Miami Beach in the fifties...
but that is for a different site and another time!!!!
Blessings to all who hold the Newark charm in their heart!!!
