Newark's Santa Claus

My Father not unlike most fathers was very special and unique. Every little boy loves to boast and brag about his father. After all he was his hero.

My father was a Newark Policeman from 1927-1959.He was well liked and was also the head of many organizations. I was often told by others that he knew just about everyone and those he didn't know, knew him.

In the late 1940's he took on a new role. He became a professional Santa Claus. He was the first Santa Claus for the Newark P.A.L. (Police Athletic League). He was also the jolly big fellow with the twinkling blue eyes that thrilled countless children.

I recently came across slides taken of my father in 1949 playing Santa Claus at the Galloping Hill Country Club. What he lacked in reindeers and a sleigh he made up with bells. Upon his entry he would yell and ring his sleigh bells as loud as possible. His entry was spectacular! The kids would scream and nothing less than the best would follow.

I still have most of his Santa Claus costume, which I treasure dearly.

My Father not unlike most fathers was very special and unique. Every little boy loves to boast and brag about his father. After all he was Newark's Santa Claus.

Merry Christmas!
