1. In a Newark Evening
News story dated Thursday, May 29, 1947, it was reported that "for
extraordinary heroism and remarkable daring, three units of the Essex Troop,
which distinguished themselves in the landings on the coast of France, have
received from the French Government, the Croix de Guerre with palm." The presentation of the unit citation was made at Fort Meade MD by the French military attache, Maurice Mathnet. Present were a dozen wartime generals and other military dignitaries. Colonel Donald W. McGowan, deputy adjutant of New Jersey, who commanded the group during the invasion of France, headed a delegation of officers and enlisted men who took part in the ceremony. |
