2. The "Y" building at 255 and Weequahic High at 277 were on the same side of Chancellor Avenue, separated only by Aldine Street. The newly-built "Y" had been opened in 1960 with a projected life use of 30 years. The "Y" planners believed at that time that after that period, the neighborhood would have too few Jews to service.

At the time of the opening of the "Y" building, Weequahic High School had a student body that was close to 100 percent Jewish.

The remaining Jewish population in the Weequahic neighborhood fled to the suburbs after the riots and the Chancellor "Y" building was sold to the Newark Board of Education in 1968 for use as a school annex.

Weequahic High, as a nearly all-Jewish high school until the start of the 1960s, saw nearly 95 percent of its graduates in that era go on to college.

It was reported, at the Weequahic High 70th Anniversary celebration, held on October 13, 2002 in South Orange, that in the 25 years prior to the riots, Weequahic High produced more PhD's than any other high school in the United States.
