2. The "Y"
building at 255 and Weequahic High at 277 were on the same side of Chancellor
Avenue, separated only by Aldine Street. The newly-built "Y" had
been opened in 1960 with a projected life use of 30 years. The "Y"
planners believed at that time that after that period, the neighborhood
would have too few Jews to service.
At the time of the opening of the "Y" building, Weequahic
High School had a student body that was close to 100 percent Jewish.
