1. The riots ended after three days. The State Police and National Guardsmen, in support of the Newark Police, expended nearly 15,000 rounds of ammunition. During that period, 250 fires were started, and 1,000 stores and businesses were ruined. There were 23 dead, 1,500 wounded and 1,600 arrested. Property damage amounted to $15 million.

The riots were mainly against white-owned businesses, and black owned businesses posted signs to deter being plundered.
