4. When M&M started
advertising on television, they sponsored an international circus program
and Joe DiMaggio was their spokesman. Sales took off and production had
to be increased more than threefold, and the number of employees mushroomed
to nearly 200.
To keep up with the plant's fast-growing capacity, the plant's engineering contractor, Ingmar Monsen, and a staff of engineers employed by him designed and installed more refrigeration and cooling equipment and systems to cool and set the chocolate candy and dry the sugar coatings. Out of space, they installed the equipment everywhere possible and ran ductwork on the roof and top floor and ran ductwork and piping down the walls and sides of the building.
