2. Gottfried Krueger, 77-year old owner of the G. Krueger Brewing Co. on Belmont Avenue, lived at 601 High Street and was head of one of Newark's leading families. He had lived there with his second wife, Bertha. His nine grown children from his two marriages were now on their own.

The Krueger mansion, a Louis XIV-Style Victorian mansion was built in 1889, at the top of what was then one of the highest points in populated Newark.

It had been home for many years to the two surviving children from his first marriage and seven surviving children of the ten from his second marriage which took place in 1874.

The building was a showplace, with lavish interior furnishings and walls graced with oil paintings which were the beer baron's pride and joy.*

* The building is now on the Register of State and National Historic Places and is being restored. Seven million dollars is currently being spent on the restoration of the building interior.
