3. Early on, when Watson's wholesale
trade was evolving on Clinton Place, bagel orders were delivered to wholesale
customers in one dozen lots. Because the bagels were too hot to bag, they
were stacked, one dozen high, on a string-bearing dowel and tied together
with the string. They were then tossed into a large wicker basket for
delivery. A wholesale account that got a five dozen bagel delivery got
five strings of bagels.
