About the time I was covering wrestling at Laurel Garden in the late 1930s, among the frequenters on Laurel Garden fight nights was a Met Life insurance agent, Herman Roth, who would attend with his two young sons, Philip and Sandy. His son Philip would later evolve into an internationally-acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winning novelist--Philip Roth--who would recall his Laurel Garden visits in his book tribute to his father "Patrimony."
