| 6. Lute Pease was
a longtime political cartoonist at the Newark News. When he won the Pulitzer
Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1949 at the age of 80, he was the oldest
person ever to win a Pulitzer Prize since they were established by the will
of Joseph Pulitzer, and presented each May since 1917.
His Pulitzer Prize winning cartoon showed John L. Lewis, a pickaxe behind his broad back, standing in front of a broken window labeled "U. S. Economy." The gaping hole was marked "Coal Strike." A black-robed figure marked "Court Order" pointed an accusing finger at the leader of the mine workers. The title of the award-winner was "Who, Me?"
