2. To commemorate
the Lincoln visit of February 21, 186l, a plaque was dedicated on November
6, 1916, on the outside wall of the Lackawanna Railroad Station. The plaque
read in part as follows:
On the 21st of February, 186l, Abraham Lincoln, President-Elect passed through Newark on his journey to Washington to assume the responsibilities of office in the crisis that was threatening the very life of the Republic. In his address to the earlier assembly that greeted him at the old Morris and Essex Station near this spot, Lincoln declared his consecration to the mighty task before him.
