From Mike Conway:

WHBI - The station began in 1933 from studios on the seventh floor of 100 Shipman Street. The call letters stood for Hoyt Brothers Incorporated, owners of the building.

The station operated only on Saturday and Sunday at 1250 AM sharing time with another station.

Later WHBI shared 1280 with WADO which bought out 'HBI in 1962 silencing "The Gospel Station of the Nation".

Also in 1962 WHBI-FM (105.9) began operation with studios and antenna at the Raymond-Commerce Building. The station was later sold. Current owner (WCAA with a Spanish format) maintains studios in Manhattan and transmitter at the Empire State Building.

WNJR - Began in 1947 at 1430 on the dial.

Early studios at 91 Halsey Street. In 1953 the station adopted a Black-oriented Rhythm and Blues format from studios and transmitter site on Vaux Hall Road in Union.

After several ownership changes the current 1430 (WNSW) has studios in Manhattan and towers in Hillside.

1430AM and 105.9FM are still licensed to Newark.

Newark-born Danny Stiles, a DJ on WHBI and WNJR, is still heard on 1430 spinning music from the 1920's through 60s. He's known as "The Vicar of Vinyl".
