7. In the early 1930s,
the Sunday night Eddie Cantor show was a family ritual. I remember the sponsor
was Chase and Sanborn's coffee. About a decade later, in December 1942,
in Army uniform, I attended an Eddie Cantor show broadcast in Hollywood.
There was a pre-broadcast studio audience warm-up and Cantor, spotting a
uniform in the audience, summoned me up on the broadcast platform and invited
me to sit alongside his vocalist, Dinah Shore during the show. I was a big
Shore fan, so you can imagine how I felt that night. Months later, at an
overseas base, Dinah was barracks pin-up.
